This week our theme was Halloween. Since I have four different groups for storytime, I get to pick several books. How lucky am I? Here are some of the books we enjoyed.
Me and My Dragon : Scared of Halloween by David Biedrzycki
Recommended Ages 2-6
A boy and his dragon are best friends. They like to do everything together, but the dragon is afraid of Halloween. The boy employs many techniques to explain about Halloween. He reads books and tries to get the dragon the perfect costume. It takes time, never the less the dragon finally agrees to go out and has a wonderful night. The facial expressions and the funny costumes had the kids laughing and vocal about the this charming tale. I used this for my 2 and 3-year-old classes and my 4 and 5-year-old class.
Goodnight Goon : A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex
Recommended Ages 3-7
Lovers of Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown will recognize this funny story. It is time for the Goon to go to bed. First he has to say goodnight to all of his monster and mummy friends. This was a perfect fit for my 4 and 5-year-old story time, it was not too scary for them and they got the humor. The class quickly realized the connection to their old favorite and embraced this new spooky version.
Many Marvelous Monsters by Ed Heck
Recommended Ages 1-4
This story uses alliteration to convey monsters performing at a talent show. By using bold colors and monsters galore we explored color identification and counting. I read this book to my one year-old and my 2 and 3 year-old classes. This was short enough to keep their attention, but still entertained them with characters that were amusing instead of frightening. I projected this book on a large screen from the website We Give Books. It is free to join and there are several great books to explore. The 2 and 3 year-olds love the big images and can go up and point to things when I ask questions.
