Is there someone your favorite child wants to learn about? The “Who Was” series is biography series that introduces school-aged children to people who have made a significant impact to the world. These books are extremely popular with the children who come to our library.
I finally got a chance to read a few and now understand why children enjoy them. They have clear black and white illustrations that give a glimpse of what was happening to the subject they are learning about. When there is an important event happening they stop and give a clear explanation along with more illustrations. Children need to read non-fiction to find out about the past. They can learn from others failures and accomplishments. Though some of the books state they are unauthorized biographies, the authors definitely have done their homework. They have bibliographies of their sources from articles using direct quotes and books. Furthermore they post timelines of what was happening to the person and significant world events occurring at the same time.
