One Day by David Nicholls
One Day is the story of Emma and Dex who are classmates. They have seen each other around and hook-up after graduation from Edinburgh University. The date is July 15th 1988. The book follows their lives for the next twenty years on July 15th. I found this to be an interesting concept and was intrigued.
Emma is definitely in love with Dex from the start, but is savvy enough to not let it show to Dex. Dex has feelings for Emma, but is not ready to admit them to her or himself. It is not just about love, it is about a relationship. I thought that was enough to carry the many false stops and starts. Dex is rich, good looking and selfish which makes it hard to believe that Emma who is witty, kind and intelligent puts up with his antics. She is so likable that I wanted stick with her. She is a true friend to Dex and at times their chemistry was delightful. The book is well written and has some very lovely moments. The conversations express emotion in a realistic way. Unfortunately it was not enough because Dex being Dex often spoiled things before they could go anywhere. Even my interest in Emma started to wane after a while. When things did come together it seemed too late. I found myself reading ahead and found the end not very satisfying for all the angst and drama.
I picked up the book because it is coming out soon as a movie with Anne Hathaway. I really hope this is the case of the movie being better than the book! The movie looks great doesn’t it???
